Put on your party hats folks, as this week we celebrate a pair of anniversaries. One is a British icon, the other is a legend of our own.
At the recent Geneva International Motor Show, Jaguar kicked off a series of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of their legendary E-type. Jag returned to the sight of the original launch in 1961: the Restaurant Hotel du Parc des Eaux-Vives. Senior executives of Jaguar owners, the Tata Group were on hand to retrace that original driving loop in classic E-types. Produced until 1974, through three different series, the E-type remains the quintessential Jaguar.
MIKE O'DRISCOLL: The E-type's such a special car. You know, in so many ways it's the Spirit of Jaguar. It's one cool car, iconic, sporting, superbly fast. It's a wonderful machine, it's a head turner. And even to this day 50 years on, it turns heads.
Back to home, it's also a big year for America's iconic off-road brand: Jeep. Not only is the Jeep Grand Cherokee our Drivers' Choice pick for Best Large Utility, but sales are up, and Jeep is the first domestic brand to reach 1 million fans on Facebook. Now it's time for Jeep to celebrate their 70th year of production. And to that, they've unveiled special 70th Anniversary Editions of each model in its line-up.
Ranging from the $23,000 Jeep Patriot all the way up to the $36,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, all will feature special wheels and trim, both inside and out. From its General Purpose military debut in 1940, to the civilian Willys-Overland models that begin in 1945, through ownership by Kaiser, AMC, and the Chrysler Group, Jeep continues to strengthen it's "rough and ready, go anywhere" image.
