MotorWeek is first on the scene in San Antonio, Texas driving the 2017 Jeep Compass.

At first glance, the Compass looks like a miniature Grand Cherokee with its sophisticated styling. Inside, the resemblance persists with upscale features like the fourth-generation of Uconnect.

North American models use a 2.4L Tigershark 4-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 175 lb.ft of torque, which is hooked to either a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, or 9-speed automatic transmission. Highway fuel economy reaches as high as 32 MPG in 4x2 manual models. Of course, off-road capability is a high priority at Jeep and the Compass boasts two new full-time 4x4 systems and a Trailhawk edition.

Arriving at dealerships soon, pricing starts at $22,000 and tops out just over $30,000 for a Limited 4x4 model.
