A Tesla Model X crashed in Whitehall, Montana after veering off of a two-lane highway and into a guardrail. The Detroit Free Press reports that the driver of the vehicle claimed the Autopilot autonomous driving system was active when the accident happened. Neither he nor the passenger were seriously injured.

This is the third such report since Tesla introduced the self-driving feature in its vehicles. A fatal crash involving a Tesla Model S in Florida, and a rollover accident in Pennsylvania involving another Model X highlight a rough roll out for the Autopilot system this summer.

The Autopilot feature is designed to take over braking and steering controls from the driver, utilizing cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and traffic data to keep the vehicle on the road. Tesla does recommend, and for some of its features, require the driver to still remain engaged with the steering wheel or other critical functions of the vehicle.

Investigations into the incidents are still ongoing.
