The media is all a buzz about rumors that the Trump administration may freeze fuel economy standards for 2020 through the 2026 model year. Such a move would spark legal fights with California, as well as the other states that follow their lead. The EPA has already indicated that the Obama era proposal, that set ever higher fuel economy standards through 2025, were not appropriate at this time and would be reviewed. Automakers, by and large, had been expecting at least a pause in any new standards so they could access the feasibility and cost of ever more complex fuel saving technology. Just such an evaluation period was scraped just before the change in administrations.
