General Motors has announced plans to close five North American Assembly plants as it focuses its product portfolio around popular SUV, crossover and truck models, and moves toward electrified self-driving vehicles in the future. This signals the end of the road for cars like the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Cruze, the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac CT6. The company has also said it will trim its salaried workforce by 15%, including 25% of the company’s executives, in an effort to streamline decision-making. These measures will save General Motors around $6 Billion annually by the end of 2020.
