Ford is using the 2018 Beijing Auto Show as a high profile launching pad for the all-new 2019 Ford Focus, the company’s latest global compact car series. First announced last week, the new Focus will be made in China and exported to the U.S., replacing the current Focus which is imported from Mexico. But, the significance of the new Focus goes well beyond one nameplate. The redesigned Focus is the first vehicle using Ford’s new modular platform. Emulating what Volkswagen has done so successfully with their flexible MQB architecture, the new Ford chassis design will be used on a wide variety of cars and SUVs both larger and smaller than the Focus, with an equally wide array of drivetrains. A modular architecture chassis aims to hike efficiency and cut design costs when designing a new generation of vehicles. The sportier looking Focus arrives in China and Europe this year, but Americans will have to wait another year before it turns wheels here.
