Tesla announces P100D vehicles: 2.5 sec 0-60, more range
Tesla announced to the world their first 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, to be offered in the Model S sedan and Model X crossover as P100D models. In the Model S, Tesla claims the P100D can do 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, when equipped with Ludicrous mode. Range has increased to 315 miles. The Model X P100D is only a little behind that, at 2.9 seconds to 60 mph, and 289 miles of range.
According to Automotive News, Tesla plans a slow rollout of the 100-kilowatt-hour battery packs, and, initially, will only offer the Performance (P) versions. Once production gets up and running smoothly, it looks like they will increase their output, as well as offer non-Performance versions.
For customers who have ordered, but not taken delivery of, P90D Ludicrous vehicles, Tesla is allowing them to upgrade for $10,000. Those who already have a P90D Ludicrous equipped vehicle can upgrade for $20,000. Tesla's blog writes, "While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development. Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development."
