Fearing that they might be falling behind in the race to develop dependable self-driving technology, Toyota has announced that it will expand its collaboration with ride-share pioneer Uber, including a new investment of $500 million. The announcement comes at a time when Uber is attempting to bolster their self-driving development program after one of their robotic cars killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona last spring. Uber will pair its technology with Toyota’s Guardian advanced safety system. The initial aim is to have the combined technology tested and ready for installation in Sienna minivans for Uber’s use starting in 2021.
