Volvo Cars has joined forces with transportation upstart Uber to field a fleet of self-driving cars in Pittsburg starting this month. A fleet of 100 specially equipped Volvo XC90 crossover utilities will eventually join the Uber taxi fleet in the “City of Bridges”. When a customer uses the Uber app to request a ride, the autonomous-driving Volvos will be assigned on a random basis. But, this does not mean there will be no one behind the wheel. Rather a Volvo representative will supervise the entire trip, and be able to take control of the vehicle if anything goes wrong. For an undefined startup period, the ride will also be free of charge.
