An award-winning program in Texas is helping to eliminate clogged sewer lines and educate students about the benefits of biodiesel. The Cease the Grease program allows residents to discard leftover cooking grease at 21 sites throughout Dallas—including outlying areas like Cedar Valley College in Lancaster. CVC’s Automotive School has also embraced the program. Using a lab kit, students process small amounts of the reclaimed grease into biodiesel to fuel these specially-converted radio-controlled cars.

DR. JENNIFER WIMBISH: Our goal is to make sure that students have what we call current and relevant experience so they are current and they can do what’s needed in the workforce.

JOHN DAVIS: The school now hopes to go beyond RC cars and turn this 1993 Mercedes Benz 500 SL into a true “grease car.” By working in partnership with the city of Dallas and the local Clean Cities Coalition, these college students have had some fun, real-life lessons on alternative fuel.
