Moving on to a utility of a more blazing hue, for 2010 BMW is giving it’s already impressive crossover performer, the coupe-like X6, a 555-horsepower, “M” division deep-muscle massage.

“Anytime BMW offers an M edition, you know it’s going to be agile, offer plenty of feedback, and pretty responsive. Basically, a blast to drive. And this new X6 M is no exception.” – Brian Roberts

And, make no mistake…this is a new breed of M.

In a notable departure from the high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines that power past M-series cars, the X6 M uses an all-new direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8.

Its brute force comes by way of a unique “crossover” exhaust manifold with the twin-scroll turbos nestled in the vee of the engine.

At Road Atlanta, this setup delivered hair-trigger, throttle response, plus horsepower bragging rights over the rival Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

An asphalt-melting 500 pound-feet of twist is available from 1500 rpm up, making the 0-60 factory time of 4.5-seconds very realistic.

BMW’s six-speed paddle-shift automatic, is the only available transmission.

However, in M Sports form, it shuts down ignition and throttle input during gear-changes for near instant shifting.

The X6’s silhouette is familiar but there’s no mistaking this hunkering 5-door coupe for anything but an M.

Huge ducts below the headlights funnel air to the intercoolers and brakes. Trademark “M” gills adorn the front fenders. Outlets behind the rear wheels cool the enormous rotors and draw the eye to M-exclusive quad exhaust pipes.

Inside, except for a handful of subtle “M” badges, the X6’s big, handsome dash and supportive seats carry over unchanged.

On sale now, the X6 M leaves BMW lots for right around $86,000.
