For 2010, the Lincoln MKZ gets a fresh new face, a new interior, and a handful of much-needed refinements to set it apart from its mechanical cousins, the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan.

Most noticeably, the MKZ dons a variation on Lincoln’s new signature split-wing grille with equally freshened headlamp clusters.

Inside, major changes make the MKZ’s cabin a much more luxurious place to spend a trip. The center stack is less imposing, and a new instrument cluster now resides under a clamshell shroud. SYNC, with 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report, comes standard.

Real wood accents are also standard, with aluminum as an option. All occupants will find premium leather seating, and the driver and front passenger have 10-way power adjusters.

There is only one trim level, but option packages are plentiful, for such luxury goodies as a moonroof, THX audio, and navigation.

The same 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 as last year is the only choice under the hood. However, for 2010, it’s mated to a new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with manual mode, which improves acceleration but not fuel economy. All-wheel drive remains an option.

Subtle suspension revisions improve ride and handling regardless of the surface. A new Sport Appearance package adds further suspension upgrades, 18-inch wheels, and a unique headlight and grille treatment.

Available at dealerships now, the 2010 Lincoln MKZ starts at under $35,000.
