2011 BMW 740Li
2011 was the second year for the 5th generation BMW 7-series. We gave you our opinions on the ActiveHybrid version a few months back, but if you're not quite sold on Hybrids quite yet, BMW would love to sell you a 740Li with its new inline turbo-6 power.
It's the first 6-cylinder in BMW's top sedan since 1992, and it's the same 3-liter, twin turbocharged mill found just about everywhere in the BMW line-up. In this big rear driver, it's good for 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. of torque. And with Government Fuel Economy ratings of 17-City 25-Highway, it gets almost the same fuel economy as the Hybrid.
Call us crazy, but we'll take the turbo-6 anytime, along with the 30 grand that pays for the hybrid's more complex drivetrain. And while that choice might keep you from winning over any new tree-hugging friends, a spirited dash down to the Sierra club meeting might win them over.
The 7-series has always handled way better than its size would indicate, so not much new here to report, but the interior continues to up the ante when it comes to luxury and technology features. There's plenty of leather and wood in the cockpit, as well as BMW's ever present iDrive. And being an Li long wheelbase model, means there's more room in the rear seat for stretching out and relaxing.
"The 7-series has always been a favorite of ours here when it comes to big luxury sedans. It just does everything well, but with a surprisingly sporty new A8 in the segment, it's no longer in a class by itself." – Brian Robinson
