Saab faithful have reason to celebrate. Saved from extinction by Dutch sports car builder Spyker, they’re now launching an all-new 2011 9-5 sedan. First seen at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the second generation 9-5 is based on GM’s stretched Epsilon platform, shared with the Buick LaCrosse. The new 9-5 is larger, now similar in size to the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

The 9-5 four-door exudes a modern and sleek Scandinavian design from front to rear, with a Sportcombi wagon expected next year. Power comes from a pair of turbocharged engines: either a 220 horsepower 2.0-liter I4, or the Aero’s 300-horse 2.8-liter V6 with XWD all-wheel drive.

On our Northern New Jersey test drive, the 9-5 delivered strong response with minimal turbo lag. Turn-ins were quick and precise thanks to very well-weighted steering. And all-wheel drive makes it a blast to bully around back roads.

“The 9-5 Aero is a sedan that wakes up the younger, more carefree sports car mentality that most four-door shoppers would give anything to get back.” – Ben Davis

Inside, the 9-5 is clearly more spacious, and its aircraft inspired, driver-centric layout echoes the business-like appearance of the exterior. The 2011 Saab 9-5 is in showrooms now starting at just under $40,000.
