The Jaguar XJ is one of the longest running model names in the biz, dating back to 1969. And its original design was so successful that the same basic theme carried on well into this century.

Well time marches on, and the XJ was not immune, eventually succumbing to a new styling direction for 2010. A Quick Spin in this ‘16 XJL reveals further refinement has now taken place.

Electronics are updated with a new InControl Touch Pro system with better navigation, and a new digital gauge panel.

A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is still standard power, and its 340-horsepower output also remains unchanged.

It was good enough to get our long wheelbase rear-driver to 60 in 5.5-seconds, and to the end of the ¼ in 13.8-seconds at 105 miles-per-hour. The supercharged 5.0-liter V8 is still available as well, in both 470 and 550-horsepower versions.

All ‘16s get a facelift too; with full LED headlights with signature DRLs, a bigger more upright grille, reshaped sculpting to the front fascia, and more chrome trim.

Continuing gluteoplasty, results in a reshaped rear bumper, new LED tail lights, and oval-shaped exhaust tips.

Portfolio trim gets some further tweaking outside; but it’s inside where you’ll appreciate it the most with upgraded leather, a panoramic glass roof, and 8-inch touchscreen navigation.

Long wheelbase models naturally feature plenty of space and amenities for back seat non-drivers; but there’s plenty up front for the driver to enjoy as well, including nicely weighted steering and a stable demeanor through corners.

’16 XJs are on sale now, with prices starting around $75,000; XJL Portfolios sticker for about $84,000.
