Volkswagen of America announced new EPA-estimated ranges for their 2022 ID.4 electric SUVs; the ID.4 Pro now capable of 280 miles on a full charge.

This estimate is 20 miles higher than the 2021 model’s 260 mile range. Alongside the ID.4 Pro, the Pro S rear-wheel drive model received an estimate of 268 miles; the all-wheel drive (AWD) Pro is capable of 251 miles and the AWD Pro S is estimated at 245 miles.

All ID.4 models are powered by an 82kWh battery, which delivers power to the permanent-magnet synchronous motor in the rear, providing 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. The AWD variants add an asynchronous electric motor in the front, with a maximum output of 107 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque. When combined, these motors provide the AWD ID.4’s with 295 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque.

Volkswagen also bolstered the ID.4’s charging capabilities; the vehicle’s DC fast-charging speeds have seen a healthy bump to 135 kW, up from 2021’s 125 kW. While specific DC fast-charging speeds are yet to be given, the 2021 ID.4 was capable of charging from 5-80 percent in approximately 38 minutes, so it can be expected to see a slight improvement for the 2022 model year. Volkswagen did, however, say that the 2022 ID.4 can charge in about 7.5 hours when using an 11 kW Level 2 charger.

Needless to say, most consumers will want to charge via the fastest means possible. Through a partnership with Electrify America, ID.4 customers will receive 3 years of complimentary 30 minute charging sessions at public Electrify America chargers. We’ve seen similar deals struck between the charging solutions-provider and various car manufacturers, like Hyundai, Kia, Lucid Motors and more; however, it’s the most fitting with VW, seeing as Electrify America is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group of America.

The 2022 ID.4 has an entry price of $41,955 after the $1,195 destination charge. That MSRP will land a rear-wheel drive Pro model; the AWD Pro starts at $45,635. This is also before any potential Federal Tax credit-- up to $7,500 in incentives. This price, alongside it’s comparable range and driving experience, made it our pick for “Best EV” in our 2022 Driver’s Choice Awards.
