BMW has drawn the curtains back on their all new 2023 X1 xDrive28i Sport Activity Vehicle, running with a new exterior design and standard all-wheel drive.

The 2023 X1 is a continuation of BMW’s long running utility, originally entering the market in 2009. The third generation builds upon the successes of the first two by including more standard safety tech and an updated powertrain.

It’s powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine, same as before, but now revised to incorporate a new dual (direct and port) injection system and revised combustion chamber geometry. That means more power: 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent to the standard all-wheel drive system and a new 7-speed dual clutch transmission, totalling out at a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds.

The new styling incorporates sharper, bolder lines and an updated twin-kidney grille. It’s not as large as we’ve seen on other recent BMW refreshes, but it is slightly bigger with a more squared-off look. It’s bookended by standard LED headlights with cornering lights, complimented in-back by LED taillights. The backend of the X1 also sees a narrow rear window and flared wheel arches.

While still regarded as a compact, the new X1 has grown in size: 1.7-inches longer and taller, and 0.9-inches wider; the wheelbase has grown 0.9-inches. That translates to more room inside the cabin for both people and payload alike. It’s still a five-seater with a second row capable of 40/20/40 split folding.

The cabin benefits from some of BMW’s latest tech, including their iDrive technology suite powered by Operating System 8. Infotainment is displayed through BMW’s Curved Display, a frameless design that combines both the centerscreen and the digital instrument panel into one driver-centric display. All occupants rest upon newly developed seats, both standard and the available sport seats. The seats are upholstered in perforated SensaTec 2.0; the sport seats feature more aggressive side and shoulder bolstering.

The 2023 BMW X1 xDrive28i is expected to start at $39,595, including the $995 destination charge. The US market can expect to see the new model ih the fourth quarter of 2022.
