2023 GMC Canyon (Left to right: AT4, AT4X, Denali)

We recently reported on a tease for GMC’s new Canyon midsize truck-- and now it’s here, boasting the first-ever Canyon AT4X model.

The 2023 Canyon is all-new, rocking a higher and wider body that’s been chiseled into a rugged appearance. The new AT4X trim is meant to provide premium amenities paired with rugged off-road capabilities; of course, this comes in at a higher premium than other Canyon’s, with the AT4X Edition 1 starting at $63,350 before destination fees.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1

Starting with the powertrain, the Canyon AT4X will utilize an “off-road optimized” version of the Canyon’s only engine: a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, GM-estimated at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This sends power to the standard four-wheel drive system. Vehicle responsiveness can be adapted through five different drive-modes: Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Terrain (low-speed precision and rock crawling), and Baja Mode (exclusive to the AT4X).

The AT4X hits the trail with a standard 3-inch factory lift, offering 10.7-inches of ground clearance; the Elevation, AT4 and Denali trims will see a 2-inch factory lift. The AT4X will also see standard Multimatic DSSV Shocks, front and rear e-locking differentials, and 33-inch MT tires. Underscoring the vehicle is a front skid plate, transfer case shield and rocker protector. Moving inside, the interior is wrapped in an exclusive Obsidian Rush/Ceramic White finish. There's also an 11.3-inch infotainment screen paired to an 11-inch digital instrument cluster.

The AT4X Edition 1 model will come packaged with a variety of accouterments, most noteworthy a front and rear underbody camera with a wash function, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a light bar, winch, and 17-inch beadlock capable wheels.

The all-new 2023 Canyon is no surprise following the recent reveal of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, and the inclusion of an AT4X package mirrors that of the Colorado’s first-ever Trail Boss trim for 2023. Following the Colorado’s path, the Canyon will only be offered in the four-door crew cab configuration. The AT4X package was first made available on the 2022 Sierra pickup, which we had a chance to demo in and around San Diego, California.

As mentioned, the 2023 GMC AT4X Edition 1 will start at $63,350 before destination charges. The standard 2023 Canyon will start around $40,000 before destination, according to GMC. Reservations for the Canyon AT4X Edition 1 are open now, with production slated for spring 2023. We’ve barely scratched the surface of the new GMC Canyon, and we’ll have more to share soon on MotorWeek!
