BMW Stays The Course on U.K. Production Plans Amid Brexit Uncertainty

BMW AG has said the company still plans to begin making an electric Mini in the U.K. later this year, even as other carmakers are pulling production out of Great Britain. BMW has four production facilities in the U.K., making engines and body parts for the Mini, as well as assembly of Mini and Rolls-Royce models. The company believes that any tariffs resulting from Britain leaving the EU would be offset by sales volume of the Mini in its home country. Like other manufacturers, BMW has scheduled their annual plant shutdowns to coincide with the March 29 Brexit deadline, in an effort to minimize production disruption, but as BMW CEO Harold Kreuger told Bloomberg TV, they have “some flexibility” to adjust if the Brexit is significantly delayed. Nissan and Honda have announced they will move some or all production out of Britain by 2021.
