Engineers, safety advocates, and even automakers are urging federal regulators to slow down the push to get self-driving cars on the road.

For years the industry has been buzzing about fully autonomous cars becoming the future of the automotive industry, but they aren't yet up to the demands of real-world driving. The Associated Press reports that several people voiced this sentiment to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration during a recent public meeting.

Experts are suggesting a slower, more deliberative approach may be needed instead of the current rapid timetable being followed.  As of January, the federal agency announced that it would begin work on writing guidance for deploying the vehicles, with a promise to have it completed by July.
