Earlier this summer we reported on the return of the Honda Civic Type R, and although we were given powertrain information, we were not given explicit numbers for the “fastest, most powerful Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the US.

Well, that is no longer the case, as Honda has officially released performance figures for the 2023 Civic Type R. The most important of which: 315-horsepower and 310-lb-ft of torque, improvements of 9 horses and 15 lb-ft from the previous Type R.

Power is derived from a more powerful version of Honda’s K20C1 engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, and is channeled to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Speaking of, the Type R’s transmission is outfitted with a lighter flywheel and revised rev-match system for better shifts. Further aiding the driver is a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift pattern. A limited-slip differential is standard.

For those wondering, Honda contributes the extra beef to a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate and a more efficient exhaust system. The exhaust is a straight-through design with an active valve, opening at the higher rpms for enhaned sound. As for the turbo, it sees a more optimized flow path and turbine wheel blades, all said to generate pressure in a wider range. With more power and greater track-tuned abilities, the new Type R is bringing the heat to your local hot laps when it launches this fall. That's why Honda has also improved engine cooling with a larger grille opening and radiator. A new large-diameter fan will also improve flow.

We expect pricing details to arrive closer to launch; for reference, the previous Type R ended its run with a starting MSRP of near $40,000, and we suspect the new one to be in that ballpark.

We’re excited to hop into the driver’s seat of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, and we’ll bring you along for the ride here on MotorWeek!
