After months of camouflaged teases, this past summer we finally got a real look at the latest Honda Civic Type R; and soon after that we had a chance to drive Sonoma Raceway for a flat-out track session. And yet here we are, staring at camoed pictures of a new Type R yet again.

The model in question is the new FL5 Civic Type R TCR, developed for motorsports competition in 2023 and now introduced by Honda Performance Development and JAS Motorsports. The new race car is, of course, built on the aforementioned Type R that we got a hold of, but it packs a few extra surprises for even more track potency.

For starters, a new exterior design and aero package for better downforce, plus a unique chassis for better corner stability and driver safety. Stopping power is upped by better braking, and upgraded transmission systems should help prospective drivers send it down the track. It’s mated up to a race-prepped version of the R’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder. Unfortunately, horsepower and torque figures have not yet been disclosed; however, even if it’s only a little more spicy than the power plant in the “base” Type R, it’s sure to be a riot.

Other available upgrades include additional lighting, anti-lock braking and a revised “quick-fill” fueling system. The cabin features driver cooling and an enhanced cockpit display providing a broader range of information to the driver.

These vehicles are to be developed in Italy by JAS Motorsports, available in North America through Honda Performance Division. Currently, the TCR is expected to make its track debut this coming April in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, fielded by HART, LA Honda World and VGRT.
