There’s a new way of satisfying your need for speed.  Mclaren has concluded the development program for their fastest and most technically advanced hyper car… ever.  The Speedtail prototype ‘XP2’ reached its maximum speed of 250 mph more than 30 times on the space shuttle landing runway at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  As with other global automakers, testing of the Speedtail prototype took place in several places around the world including Germany and Spain. 

The source of this hypercar’s speed is a gas-electric hybrid powertrain producing a combined 1,055 hp and 848 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful McLaren road car.  The company says 0-186 mph passes by in less than 13 seconds.  McLaren says the batteries constantly self-charge when the Speedtail is driven.  While there’s no ‘plug-in’ element, they say a wireless charging pad trickle-charges and maintains the battery’s status when the vehicle is not being driven. The three-seat Hyper GT is 17-feet long with a carbon fiber body, so it’s also the most aerodynamic McLaren ever. 

Production of the first 106 McLaren Speedtails is now underway.  They’re being hand made at the company’s production center in Woking, UK. When McLaren announced the car in the fall of 2018, the price was $2.2 million.  The first customers will start receiving what’s now the pinnacle of the McLaren Ultimate Series next month.
