The scandinavian automaker Polestar has been making some EV waves the last few years with their Polestar 2 electric sedan/hatchback mashup, but we knew it wouldn’t stop there. After multiple teases, the brand’s first SUV has been officially detailed: the Polestar 3.

The new model follows the apt naming convention chosen by the Volvo-owned automaker, serving as the brand’s third entry in the automotive world. The Polestar 3 is also their first product to be produced on two continents, slated for production in both China and the United States.

But we’ll come back to that. For now, let’s talk performance. The Polestar 3 will come standard with a dual-motor configuration set with a rear bias, putting down 489 horsepower and approximately 620 lb-ft of torque. Plenty quick on paper, but an optional Performance Pack will up that to 517 horsepower and about 671 lb-ft. As of right now, Polestar is estimating a 5-second 0-62 mph time or 4.7-seconds with the Performance Package. Top speed sits at 130 mph.

Power is fed to the system by a 111 kWh battery pack, targeting a range of up to 379 miles and rechargeable up to 250 kW DC or 11 kW AC. An adjustable one-pedal drive feature is included, along with an electric Torque Vectoring Dual Clutch function on the rear axle (an evolution from the Polestar 1); an available decoupling function allows the Polestar 3 to operate using just the front motor, saving energy in certain situations.

Expect many of the Polestar 2’s goodies: A full-length panoramic glass roof, LED lighting all throughout the vehicle, retractable door handles and more. Down to the ground are standard 21-inch alloy wheels and an air suspension system; the Performance Package adds 22-inchers for a little extra flare.

The Polestar 3 is being built on a new all-electric base developed between Polestar and Volvo– the first to utilize the technology. Production is slated to begin mid-2023 at the plant in Chengdu, China, with additional manufacturing coming out of Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina facility sometime in 2024, eventually switching North American supply over to this stateside plant.

Orders are open now for those in the initial launch markets; for those of us counting in USD, expect a starting price of $85,300 with delivery fees– touching down stateside in the fourth quarter of 2023. The Performance Package is a $6,000 upgrade.
