Smart brand to Exit North American Market
The writing is on the wall for the Smart pocket-car brand, as Mercedes-Benz has confirmed they will discontinue sales of the tiny cars in the U.S. and Canada at the end of 2019. Smart narrowed its focus to electric vehicles only in North America last year, but dwindling sales of the diminutive dual-seaters, down to just 1,276 cars in 2018, prompted the decision to depart after eleven years in the market. Parts and service for Smart owners will continue through Mercedes-Benz dealers. The company announced last month that it was entering a 50/50 joint venture with Chinese automaker Geely to move Smart production to a new factory in China in 2022.
