Takata Airbag Recall Keeps On Keeping On!
According to Automotive News, an additional 10 million Takata-sourced airbag inflators are being recalled. This recall covers airbag inflators that were actually installed as repairs after the initial recalls even though their design was still suspect. The concept at the time was that a redesigned inflator would be available before these units became flawed by being in hot and humid environments for extended periods. The original inflators would degenerate over years and sometimes explode in a crash. At least 24 death have been caused by Takata inflator malfunction. After bankruptcy, Takata assets were purchased by China’s Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp. and renamed Joyson Safety Systems. Vehicles affected by this recall include those from Honda, Fiat Chrysler, and BMW. In total 14 brands are involved. The Takata airbag recalls amount to the largest recall program in history. If you have a question about the airbag in your vehicle contact your local dealer, or go to www.recalls.gov for more information on your specific vehicle.
