Tesla Motors’ announcement of a hopped-up version of its Model S luxury sedan with all-wheel drive came as no surprise. The fact that the vehicle blasts from 0 to 60 mph in little more than 3 seconds is.

This supercar-like performance comes from the fact that the Tesla Model D adds a second electric motor, to the front of the car,  that will deliver power only to front wheels. This augments the original rear motor, rear drive configuration of the Model S to make a true all-wheel drive system. The new all-wheel drive capability will provide Tesla a chance to broaden buyer interest in areas where there is cold and snowy weather like the East Coast and the Midwest. Tesla also announced that the all-wheel drive version will have a slight increase in range giving it an extra 10 miles on each charge.

The Tesla first edition of the Model D, the P85D, buyers will receive in December. Models 60D and 85D will arrive to buyers in February.
