Volkwagen will mark the end of production of the iconic Beetle at its plant in Mexico today. The final third generation model, the blue coupe shown above, is bound for a museum. The original Beetle was designed in 1938 under Nazi supervision to be their "People's Car" and dublicate what the Ford Model T did in America by introducing average Germans to motorized travel. The car actually did not enter serious production until after World Wat II ended. The original Model 1 everntually surpassed the Model T in production numbers. VW has stopped Beetle production before and there is always a chance it could be reinvented as an electric car.
