We previewed the entire 2012 Volkswagen Passat lineup last fall. But this summer we got to spend some extended time with the extended range Passat TDI. And we came away very impressed with this fuel efficient diesel family sedan. Indeed, Volkswagen hits a homerun with the Passat’s clean diesel approach, achieving a Government Combined Fuel Economy rating of 35. That provides a driving range of 650 miles. We actually managed 41 miles per gallon in mixed driving, on par with the best comparably sized full-hybrid sedans we’ve tested. Using the same turbo 2-liter as the Jetta TDI, output is 140 horsepower. Solid low-end torque gives it more gumption than expected, and keeps performance adequate. A simple and refined interior offers plenty of front and rear passenger room, and comfort in spades.

STEVEN CHUPNICK: The Passat TDI is a perfect everyday car. It handles well, performs when you need it, and serves up luxury car-like comfort. Add to it the low starting price, and the efficiency of a diesel engine. There’s a lot to love.

The Volkswagen Passat TDI starts at about $27,000 and is available now.
