Volvo is ratcheting up their compact hatchback coupe with the 2012 C30 T5 R-Design Polestar edition. Polestar Performance is Volvo’s long time racing partner and factory tuner. You won’t notice much new on the outside, other than the Polestar performance badge. In fact, it’s the only thing separating it and the already impressive C30 T5 R-Design. The big change is in the powertrain where software of the 2.5-liter turbo I5 is overhauled, boosting horsepower 23 to 250. 0 to 60 is 5.9 seconds, about a second quicker than our last C30 test. Our car sported a 6-speed manual although a five speed auto is available. No changes in the chassis compared to the T5 R-Design, and given its tight, flat, and slightly stiffer nature, none needed. You’ll certainly feel the Polestar upgrades. But, not at the pump, as Volvo claims the performance boost does not impact fuel economy.

Inside, the C30 T5 R-Design’s sporty attitude is also maintained, with two-toned black and white leather upholstery and a very minimalistic look. Aluminum inlays, including pedals, round out this design from top to bottom. For a modest $1300 added the C30 T5 R-Design’s $28,000 base price, the Polestar chip nicely ups the enjoyment of Volvo’s little coupe. Only a temperamental clutch, and an esoteric nav system hindered our otherwise solid driving experience. The 2012 C30 T5 R-Design Polestar is available now.
