The 7-th gen Sonata gets a refresh that includes a more striking front fascia and slimmer taillights.

Mechanically, the only major change is to the top trims where the 2.0-liter Turbo trades a shift able 6-speed auto for an 8-speed.

But even the base non-turbo powertrain was capable on the hills east of La Jolla. A stiffer rear suspension and new bushings contributed to the smooth and more solid ride.

GARICK ZIKAN: “So we slipped in behind the new 3 spoke steering wheel of the new Hyundai Sonata. This is where we’re really noticing some changes. The engineers increased the torsion bar stiffness within the steering system by 12%. There are also new steering calibrations. The result is solid responsive maneuvering around the curves along twisting roads.”

JOHN DAVIS: The optional Smart Cruise Control was up to the stop-and-go traffic challenge… making this a capable and comfortable commuter… that’s also ready for fun.

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata is on sale now, starting around $22-thousand.
