If you were stunned to see the 8 Series Coupe return to the BMW lineup last year, it looks like that was just the start of surprising things to come for BMW’s luxury 2-door. This year, they’ve snuck a couple more doors on it and dubbed it the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupe is available as the 840i with a 335-horsepower turbo-6, and the M850i with a 523-horsepower V8 turbo.  xDrive all-wheel-drive is standard with the M850, optional on the rear-drive 840; each working through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The new Gran Coupe uses a stretched version of the 8 Series Coupe chassis; and if you think adding 9-inches of overall length and two additional doors wouldn’t work, you’d be wrong.  It looks elegant, stately, and downright gorgeous.

That certainly applies to the interior as well; where the 8-series’ unique sport/luxury cocktail is as intoxicating as ever.  Only now, you get to share it with more adults.

"If you don’t like the idea of the whole four-door coupe thing, just think of it as a much sportier 7 series sedan, because if it’s anything like the M850i Coupe we had a while back, it’s going to be fun to drive."

That’s because the Dynamic Damper Control suspension provides a ride that’s either as aggressive or comforting as you want.

Style, luxury, performance, it’s the total package, priced appropriately, starting around $85,000. Stay safe and keep it locked on MotorWeek, as we’ll have much more on the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe soon.
