This is the all new 5th-gen 2022 Subaru WRX, now using Subaru’s global platform for the first time and not sharing any similar sheetmetal with the Impreza, none of it, not even the roof. Insane!

The design still remains aggressive and easily recognizable with aerodynamic cladding, fender well air vents, and a tasteful deck spoiler. Interior design is clean, and the flat bottom steering wheel is a welcomed addition.

Under the hood, the new 2.4-liter turbo BOXER delivers a 271-horsepower punch with a nicely spread out 258 pound feet of torque. The power is everywhere, on this trip through the hills of Sonoma, I was impressed with how low in the tach the full torque was available, we’re talking 2,000 RPM.

Thankfully it's still a driver’s car with this well-weighted 6-speed manual, it has the right sized shifter knob and a very informative clutch, all proof that decent manual transmissions are still out there. Large analog gauges and tactile steering wheel mounted buttons for audio and phone keep your eyes on the twistys.

Sadly the automatics weren’t ready yet for his event, on paper they sound legit and I was really eager to experience one. Adjustable suspension, drive mode settings and Recaros are available on the top level GT trims but only when equipped with the automatic….for now anyway. I’m sure if we all make enough noise Subaru might hear us!

Fuel economy with the manual we tested is 19-city, 26-highway and 22-combined.

WRX should be for sale this spring and we’ll get you pricing info and a whole lot more soon in a full road test. So keep it locked on MotorWeek.
