2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid
The third-generation Toyota Tundra full-size pickup is here, and it came in force. i-FORCE, that is, assisted by a new hybrid powertrain.
Headlining the show is an i-FORCE 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. The i-FORCE MAX casts an electric motor in a supporting role, mounted between the engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Power comes on quick, totaling 437 horses and 583 lb-ft of torque, tow-capable of just over 10,000 lbs.
JESSICA RAY: "It isn't a hybrid in the traditional sense that we think of because Toyota has been focusing much more on capability, with the low-end torque rather than necessarily fuel economy. The ride is incredibly smooth, the engine is pretty quiet, but it still feels like a pickup truck which I think will make the Tundra lovers very happy."
The i-FORCE MAX is optional on certain higher trims, but comes standard in the new top-trim Capstone model. It boasts premium leather-trimmed seats, open-pore wood panels, special ambient lighting, and plenty more. The driver is aided by a 12.3-inch instrument panel, and everyone benefits from the 14-inch infotainment screen. Capstones start around $75,000.
A big price tag, but a top-notch Tundra worthy of its admission fee.
