Subaru has now joined the global EV market with the 2023 Solterra SUV.

Highlighting its Subaru credentials first: there’s standard X-Mode All-Wheel-Drive, more than 8-inches of ground clearance, easy to use tech, and a full suite of EyeSight driver assist systems; as well as a surround view camera for the first time in a Subaru.

As for EV specifics, there’s a max range of 228-miles; and in typical conservative Subaru fashion, combined output for both front and rear motors, is only 215-horsepower, though that always seemed to be just enough for everything we came across during our early drive time in California.

“Somehow Subaru was able to create an entirely new all-electric vehicle that manages to feel exactly like a Subaru. And that’s a great thing. It’s quiet, comfortable, very capable, and even a little bit of fun.”

True 5-passenger space inside, with more of a restrained theme compared to the tech overload of many EVs; plus 29 cubic-ft. of cargo space in back.

With its signature hexagonal grille lines and low hood, it truly looks like a Subaru, with a little bit of Toyota RAV4 thrown in on the body panels, and lots of functional aero treatments throughout.

It was just a matter of when not if Subaru would join the Global EV market, and the 2023 Solterra will make it happen when they begin arriving this summer.  Pricing starts at around $45,000.

And we’ll have much more on the Subaru Solterra soon, right here on MotorWeek.
