Our quick spin with Audi has us testing not one, but three of the brand’s 2014’s…the Q5…A6…and A7…

But, all with new turbo diesel TDI power…

…that is to say the same TDI power; as each adds Audi’s fuel efficient but spirited 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6, rated at 240 horsepower and, the oh-so important 428 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps surprisingly to some, TDI application in each vehicle felt decidedly unique.

In the Q5, the boost in low-end torque is spirited. While the most family oriented of the three, it also provides an impressive amount of thrills. Plus, we managed 32.7 MPG in 109 miles of mixed driving.

The A7, while definitely the looker of the trio, carried a little too much extra weight to be our favorite of the three. Still plenty fun and plenty efficient, we averaged 33.6 MPG over 91 miles.

That leaves the A6 sedan, which makes the best use of the TDI’s gains in both torque and economy. Though not quite a pure sport-sedan, it provided enough of a spirited bite to leave us satisfied. We averaged a very respectable 35.5 MPG in 100 miles over hill and dale.

All available now, prices range from $47,000 for the Q5, to $58,000 for the A6, to $68,000 for the A7. These three models join the already on sale A8L and Q7 TDIs, and coming soon is the smaller A3 TDI. So there’s no shortage of options when it comes to Audi diesel power.
