Just ask us to come drive the most powerful anything, and we’re there. So, when BMW offered us a spin in the world’s most powerful hybrid, off to Miami we went.

First, the details.  The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a full hybrid, combining a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 with two electric motors for a combined 480 horsepower. That equates to 5.4 second 0-60 times, and government fuel economy ratings of 17 City and 20 Highway. We averaged just over 20 without much effort. That’s about 20% better than our long term X6.

The two-mode transmission combines four mechanical gears with three simulated ones to send seven speeds through the X-drive all-wheel drive system.

The 57 kilowatts worth of nickel metal hydride batteries are liquid cooled and stored under the luggage floor.

It’s a hybrid like you would expect from BMW, meaning compromising performance is not an option.  The suspension has been recalibrated and the braking system is now fully electronic.

There are a few noticeable exterior changes, mainly a hood bulge for the additional hardware, and a slicker design for the 19-inch wheels.

Inside, the only notable additions are the usual hybrid readouts and gauges.

“While it’s obvious performance was as much of a goal as outright fuel economy, any little bit helps, and if you can get some more performance to go along with the extra fuel economy, well, that’s just icing on the cake.” – Brian Robinson

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is on sale starting at just under $89,000.
