Enthusiasts may cringe at the thought, but not all cars are made with them in mind. Case in point, the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage.

We got our First Look at this urban economy car on the tiny streets of Quebec City, a setting in which this compact thrived.

GREG CARLOSS: The new Mirage is a city car and you really can’t put it in any other category and it does what it’s designed to do. It’s only got 74-horsepower coming out of its 3-Cylinder engine, but that’s all you need in the city and even Mitsubishi says, “the Mirage is supposed to get you from A to B safely and efficiently” and it does so efficiently with 40 miles-per-gallon combined and those are realistic numbers. I’ve been driving it in the city all day and the readout has been consistent at around the 40.

And that 40 miles-per-gallon came in a Mirage equipped with the Jatco CVT7, the first CVT to use an auxiliary two-step gear box, improving responsiveness and reducing noise at highway speeds. All of this combined with an extremely low curb-weight makes the Mirage America’s most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered non-hybrid.

Mitsubishi doesn’t expect to sales to be huge, but remember, the idea behind the Mirage is that less is more. And if you want more, stay tuned for MotorWeek for more first impressions in the coming weeks.
